Short Film Center - 2010 Jury Citation For Vasudha Award
KAIPPAD
For providing insight on an ancient system of agriculture, “Kaippad” unravels a year long story of organic farming. With an equal focus on the many life forms that share this salt marsh habitat with the hard working farmers, the film portrays a compelling message of sustainable farming by working with Nature instead of against her.
NIYAMGIRI YOU ARE STILL ALIVE
For the passionate portrayal of a battle for survival, the film maker has taken pains to gain the confidence of a beleaguered tribal community fighting a multi-national. Going beyond the Politics of big Corporation versus rural folks, the film starkly reveals the real threats of losing land, livelihoods and gods. This film is a strong statement for the ‘Power of the People’ a source of inspiration for battles against injustice.

This perfectly formed short film delighted the jury with its cinematic expression of a universal theme where the beautiful choreography of seeming unrelated sound and picture illustrated the cold war that raged between a couple heading out for a party.

The jury would like to commend the allegorical enactment of a strange situation between a transvestite prostitute and an obsessive-compulsive English teacher. The direction and performance led to a witty and engaging short film.

The psyche of a modern Indian woman regarding a matrimonial portrait effectively under the shadow of Satyajit Ray’s Charulata – the lady who sought liberation 100 years ago. The jury enjoyed the irony and desire to highlight an issue that persists to this day.
